STATEMENT OF NEED
DISCLOSURE POLICY STATEMENT
The incidence and prevalence of asthma has increased considerably over the past two decades. Each year asthma is responsible for 10.5 million office visits, a quarter of emergency room visits, and is a major cause of hospitalization leading to health care costs of more than 18 billion dollars a year. Yet, recognition of asthma's mental, physical, and economic burden among physicians remains poor with over 40% of asthmatics unaware of their condition. In addition, physicians rank asthma behind diabetes, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity despite evidence that uncontrolled asthma can be fatal.
Health care provider training is associated with improved asthma control and physical health. Thus, in order to improve asthma-related morbidity it is critical that physicians treating asthmatics, which include pulmonologists and PCPs, receive additional education on a step-wise approach to the diagnosis, evaluation, and implementation of guideline treatment regimens. This may in turn help reduce unnecessary and preventable exacerbations, hospital visits, and mortality.
